Bernard Dale Hunt
March 15, 1963 — June 30, 2019
Bernard Dale Hunt, 56 of Charlotte, NC passed away on June 30, 2019.
Bernard Lived in Charlotte most of his life but has lived in Bessemer City, NC the last few years. Bernard was the son of the late Jimmy Lee Hunt and Barbara Jean Brayboy Hunt. He is survived by his 5 children, Michael Hunt, Jonathan (Johnny) Hunt, Jordan Hunt, Shelby Hunt and Jackson Hunt, His Grandchildren Trevor Hunt and Granddaughter Mei (May) Hunt, his brother Kenneth Hunt (wife Ruth Hunt) and his ex-wife Tracy Pannell Hunt. Bernard and Tracy's love and devotion to each other remained strong to the end and was a beautiful example of how Love conquers all. Bernard is also survived by many Aunts, Uncles, and Cousins living from Robeson County to Charlotte. Friends of Bernard's children usually grew to call him Pops. He liked that affectionate name and quickly grew to consider them family also. Bernard was predeceased by his first wife Lisa Maynor Hunt the mother of Michael and Jonathan.
One friend who Bernard considered a brother was Douglas Maxey (Jr. High Classmate) they were so close, other family started to calling Douglas, "Doug Dale". Or as Bernard called him "Bestest".
Because of Bernard's faith in Jesus Christ, we have the assurance he is now well and strong in the presence of his Lord, his Parents, his beloved cousin Matthew and other family gone before. We imagine he entered heaven with a loud laugh and asked where was the beach?
What brought Bernard the most Joy in life was family gatherings. When he lived in Charlotte he was famous for his cookouts on the back deck at his Greystone residence. His laugh was loud, boisterous, and contagious. More than he loved cookouts, he loved family trips to Myrtle Beach. The more family the better. Kids, Cousins, Brother Kenny, Grandparents, Friends. He loved to be surrounded by people he loved and who loved him. These are the memories we will hold onto and cherish the rest of our life. We are grateful his health did allow him to go on one of those beach trips within the last year.
In years past, He made an annual drive down to the South Carolina border and bought Fireworks to shoot with his children when they were young in Charlotte. We remembered that when we saw fireworks this year. Whether watching his 3 youngest play in their inflatable pool in Mt. Holly or sitting on their front porch eating watermelon, he was content to be surrounded by family.
Through learning from his mother and lots of trial and error, Bernard was an excellent cook. Not only on cookouts but Holiday Meals also. Turkey, real Cornbread Dressing with Oysters, Gravy, the whole nine yards or a pan of Lasagna. Every now and then he would drop back to his Lumbee heritage and fix a pot of Hog Maws or Chicken and Paster (for those not from Down Home-Chicken & Dumplings).
He loved using expressions from his Lumbee heritage. "Take me up a plate", "go put this in the cabinator" And for those of you who are not from "Down Home" Robeson County, a Settin up, is when all the family gets together before the funeral and laughs and talks and remembers the loved one now gone. He loved to play with words. "Who dat say who dat when I say who dat?" Followed by boisterous laugh. You had to laugh even though it was not really that funny.
There seemed to be a group of relatives who had March Birthdays. We will all remember the annual March Birthday dinner at Nakato Steakhouse. As the years went by and folk's life changed, Bernard did not make it to this event for quite a few years but he always remembered them with Joy.
Bernard was known to be hard working. He started to work for UPS when he was still in high school at Myers Park Charlotte. He worked two jobs for years with Preferred Parking and UPS nights until he became a UPS driver and was able to let go Preferred Parking. In his early 20s he bought his first home on Greystone Road where he started his family. In recent years, if folks asked the boys in the Bessemer City Home, What is your dad doing? The answer was often, he is mopping the floor for the third time or down on his hands and knees washing the steps with a brush. He liked to stay busy. You never heard he is sitting down watching a movie on TV. Maybe watching the 700 club.
Bernard's health the past few years did take away some of his beloved family gatherings and meals and trips and relationships and some of the volume of his laugh. We are blessed we have a life time full of memories of a kind, hardworking, loving, hilarious, generous Son, Father, Husband, Brother, Friend, Nephew, Cousin and Pops.
