Indian Trail

Indian Trail - Betty “Ruth” Chapman Auten, 82, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her surviving children, early Saturday, March 25, 2023.

A memorial service will be held 3:00 p.m. Saturday, April 1, 2023 at New Covenant Baptist Church, 5114 Rogers Rd, Monroe, NC. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service, at the church.

Betty, or Ruth, as she was known by some, is survived by two sisters, Mildred Williams and husband, Rodney and Hilda Elliott and husband, Bob; sisters-in-law, Marjorie Auten and Nancy Chapman; brother-in-law, Joe Taylor; children, Melinda Bradley and husband, Mike and Jeffrey Auten and wife, Dawn; grandchildren, Brandy ( Eddie ), Cameron, Heather, Gavin ( Morgan ), Jones and Audrey; 10 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Hazel Chapman; her husband of 58 years, Jerry Auten, Alfred Chapman; sister, Ellen Taylor; and oldest son, Thomas “Tommy” Auten.

Betty was a long-time member of New Covenant Baptist Church of Indian Trail and loved her Lord with all her heart. She was genuine and when she said, “bless your heart”, you know she meant it. She was an accomplished seamstress, an excellent cook and cake decorator and the best child care provider. She raised her three children with integrity, instilling in them a sense of independence and responsibility. She spent much of her life caring for her grandchildren, as well as many others whom she viewed as her own. She was quick to praise and encourage her children and grandchildren and taught them all how to love fiercely and enjoy life. Betty was fun to be around, love music and was sassy to the core. She especially enjoyed sitting quietly with her beloved cat “Boots” while watching TV. She took pride in everything she did and loved her family with all her heart.

Her family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the caregivers at the New Testament Adult Center of Monroe, as well as the care team at Addison of Indian Trail. Betty touched the hearts of so many lives and is going to be dearly missed but she will live on in the hearts and memories of all who knew her.

In lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests, with gratitude, that memorial contributions, in Betty’s honor, be made to New Covenant Baptist Church, 5114 Rogers Rd, Monroe, NC 28110 ( www.ncbcit.com ).
