Hans Joachim Teich

October 29, 1927 to Dr. Egon Hans Teich and his wife, Nelly Teich nee Stets in Gera, Germany. He grew
up in his hometown and due to the war graduated from high school in both 1944 and 1946. He served in
the military at the end of World War II. He started his professional career in the textile industry after
high school. His education continued at the Textilingenier Schule Krefeld receiving his degrees in 1954.
While he attended school, he rented a room from a war widow whose youngest daughter, Sigrid,
became his wife in 1959. They celebrated 63 years of marriage prior to her death in 2023.
Most of Hans’ career was with Bayer AG. After eight years in Germany, he spent the remainder of his
career with their American subsidiary in New Jersey and North Carolina until his retirement in 1993. This
was followed by a twenty-year stint as a consultant to a North Carolina container reconditioning
company.
Hans and his family joined Faith Lutheran Church in New Providence, NJ in 1972. He quickly became an
active participant in the congregation, particularly in stewardship ministries, and served a term as
Church Council President. A move to North Carolina in 1985 brought them to Christ Lutheran Church
where he once again found opportunities for service as an usher, hospital visitor and home communion
visitor.
Participation in the Word and Witness program in the 1970’s led to an interest in deeper matters of
faith. Through the encouragement of others, he became a key player in a prayer ministry which he
brought with him to Christ Lutheran. After retirement, he audited classes at Lutheran Theological
Southern Seminary for four years, amazing the New Testament professor with his knowledge of Greek
learned in high school over fifty years earlier. He used this education to become a regular adult
education teacher at church.
He was predeceased by his parents, his brother, Fritz, and his wife, Sigrid. He is survived by his son,
Andreas (Tracy) and daughter, Sabine Stevens (Rick), his grandsons Jonathan Teich (Aja) and Nicholas
Stevens, his sister Herta Gantke (Erhard) and cousins, nieces, and nephews in Germany.
A memorial service will be held at Christ Lutheran Church, Charlotte on May 21, 2024 at 2:00pm. Rev.
Scott Suskovic will preside.
